What is it?

TapStar is an independent certification for bars, restaurants, and brewery taprooms who go the extra mile to serve an excellent glass of draft beer. Certification is performed through an in-person auditing process, evaluating the draft system, draft service, and the draft beer quality. TapStar promotes certified retailers with beer drinkers to help bring them in the door.

Why Does it Matter?

Lots of things can go wrong with draft beer that can make it taste bad. Dirty draft systems that aren’t cleaned every two weeks cause beer to not taste as fresh or bright and can even develop bacterial infections that make beer taste sour or like butter. Dirty glassware can kill the foam on beer, making your beer taste off or flat. Out of code beer tastes stale, like wet paper or cardboard. And these are just a few of the issues.

Many beer drinkers are aware of what can go wrong with draft beer and make an effort to patronize places that are doing it right. Beer drinkers who aren’t aware of these issues may not be able to put their finger on what’s wrong but they can still tell when the beer isn’t quite right. They’ll just simply not order another or go somewhere else next time. All of these things will keep your customers from ordering another beer and may even keep them from coming back at all.

What does it Cost

TapStar Certification is free to start. I want to provide any help I can to bars, restaurants, and taprooms as they begin to rebuild their business after the covid stay-at-home orders. As the hospitality business begins to get back on more solid footing, certification will become fee-based with annual renewal.
